RCC Computer Use Policy

Rappahannock Community College provides computers and a variety of software applications
for students conducting their coursework. 

Users must be at least sixteen (16) years of age, registered students, or supervised by an adult (other than RCC staff).  Computer users in the instructional labs
must be registered students or Upward Bound Students. 

All users must abide by the
VCCS Information Technology Student/Patron Ethics Agreement, the VCCS Computer Ethics Guideline, and the RCC Computer Use Policy.

 

Patrons and students are expressly forbidden from:

  • Downloading files onto the hard drive (downloading files onto a personal disk or thumb drive is permissible)
  • Accessing or altering files necessary for terminal, server, or program operation
  • Permanently changing defaults or settings, such as colors, screen savers, and icons
  • Transmitting or making accessible offensive, annoying or harassing material.

Patrons and students should use computers for research and educational purposes only.
College computers are not to be used for personal entertainment.

Appropriate prioritized computer usage includes:

  • Accessing college email and BlackBoard accounts* (*registered students only )
  • Working on class assignments
  • Working on educational software
  • Conducting research for educational or personal use
  • Conducting a library search
  • Conducting career or college research
  • Working on training software or learning new software

Instructional labs are used for classes, workshops, and training sessions only. Students and participants in workshops and training sessions should use the Success Labs to complete assignments.

Student Success Labs are non-scheduled, open labs, available for RCC students and other students for academic work.. Users may be asked to present their student ID or logon to Blackboard to verify their status as a student.

 

Rappahannock Community College reserves the right to deny or limit computer usage and related services to groups or individuals making excessive demands. Cooperation by students and patrons is essential if the college is to adequately serve all customers. Patrons and students who refuse to cooperate with college personnel enforcing the computer usage policy will lose the right to use computer services at the college. Enforcement procedures are detailed in the "VCCS Computer Ethics Guideline" and "Student Disciplinary Procedures" both found in the Rappahannock Community College Catalog and Student Handbook.
