Preakness Party

Ladies and gentlemen—

The promise of Springtime warms our spirits with thoughts of a cherished rite—

the RCC Preakness Party!

Who can resist the call to gather for the fifth annual Preakness Party benefitting the RCC Educational Foundation?

Winter soon will pass to make way for another glorious season of renewal. Among the anticipated pleasures is the tradition of gathering at a stunning site on race day to celebrate the annual RCC Preakness Party, now among the most cherished rites of spring for those who have indulged themselves previously.  Ah, the delights that await the senses of those who heed the bugler’s call!

What fun to stroll among smartly dressed ladies and snappily dressed gents as you sample delectable offerings from the area’s top chefs, sip excellent Virginia wines, and enjoy lilting musical tunes.  You won’t go home empty-handed after perusing elegant tables of intriguing silent and live auction items, including fabulous trips, dinners, and artwork that you will actually want to bid on!

Later comes the thrill of viewing the Preakness Stakes horserace live on wide-screen TVs to see if your raffle entry finishes in the money. It all makes for an unforgettable afternoon—all for a most worthy cause.

This year’s the setting—Wirtland at Ingleside Plantation Vineyards near Oak Grove—features a charming Neo-Gothic mansion on the grounds of one of Virginia’s oldest and largest wineries, founded and operated by the Flemer family.  Pre-event winery tours and perhaps even arrival by boat along the rolling Rappahannock River are under consideration.

Best of all, there is no need to feel guilty about indulging yourself in these various pleasures of palate and soul when you realize that:

While you are having the time of your life,

you in turn are helping RCC students seize

the opportunity of a lifetime!

Signature delicacies will be offered from the menus of the area’s finest restaurants, including: Café Mojo, Urbanna; Dockside Restaurant in Colonial Beach; The Steamboat Restaurant at Piankatank River Golf Club; The Tavern in Heathsville, The Tides Inn, Irvington; Stratford Hall; Swank’s on Main in Kilmarnock; and Tommy’s of Reedville. Chefs’ selections will be perfectly complemented by the bouquet and exquisite flavors of fine Virginia wines from Belle Mount Vineyards and our hosts, Ingleside Vineyards Winery.

And back again by popular demand, the widely-renowned “Strings & Things” ensemble will fill the air with pleasing melodies befitting a delightful spring afternoon.

This year’s array of imaginative live and silent auction items promises something for all tastes and pocketbooks. Look for travel packages, antiques, jewelry, curios, original art works and fine art prints from area artists, antiques, jewelry, curios—and maybe even a few surprises!  You can review auction offerings in advance, beginning April 1, by visiting the RCC website at http://www.rappahannock.edu/, and clicking on the Preakness Party link.

RILL Classes at RCCRappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning (RILL)

RILL, a program of the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation, Inc., is designed to be a stimulating and life-enriching learning experience for inquisitive adults.

Mission: Recognizing that a vigorous mind is as necessary to a full life as are physical exercise and social relationships, the Rappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning (RILL) offers educational opportunities and intellectual enrichment primarily for the over-55 population. The institute is organized by volunteers with the support of the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. In a stimulating classroom study environment, participants may acquire new knowledge, explore ideas, and share their interests and expertise with other community members.

Classes: RILL's noncredit college-level classes are held in convenient locations and usually meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Registration and payment of $35 tuition per course are required prior to the start of classes. Class size is limited, so early registration is important. Specific preparatory reading material may be suggested by an instructor, allowing students to achieve a greater depth of education. No prerequisites will be expected, no tests will be administered, and no credits will be awarded. Evaluations by participants will provide feedback for future course offerings.

Registration: To register and pay by check, please contact RCC College Advancement Administrative Specialist Sharon Drotleff at: (804) 333-6707 (toll-free at 1-877-RCC-3679) or by email: sdrotleff@rappahannock.edu, and request that a brochure be mailed to you. The tuition fee must accompany the filled-out form. Checks should be made payable to RCC/EFI. You may register and pay by phone with either Visa or MasterCard. Tuition is not tax-deductible. No tuition refunds will be made should a participant decide to cancel. Separate charitable gifts to the Foundation, designated for RILL, will help to defray RILL program costs. These gifts are tax-deductible.
